The lashes on this colt are just single lines that slope downward. Horse have long eye lashes, so you can add these as well. This is called a catchlight, and it’s the light reflecting off of the eye. They served as good guidelines, but you don’t need them anymore. You can also erase the “shape” lines you drew. Notice the shape of the nostrils - almost like tear drops. Notice the eyes are like egg-shaped ovals that slant upward. Draw the eyes on top of the center line you drew. You can mark this spot lightly with a line.Ī horse’s eyes are located near the sides of its head. The eyes will go half-way down on your original oval for the head. These lines won’t follow your shapes exactly. ![]() To draw them, follow the outline (or contour) of the horse, creating curves and angles just as you see them on the reference picture. ![]() Draw these lines darker than the lines you drew for the shapes. Now it’s time to add in the lines that will really define your horse. That’s it for the shapes! You should be able to see how your horse is going to fit on the page. One more line - this one going straight across horizontally - indicates the middle of the horse. The other side of the leg is a slanted in the opposite direction as the neck. The leg line goes down vertically from the neck. The lower neck line slants downward until it reaches the leg. On this colt, the top line actually attaches at the ear. The neck is just two straight lines, but note where the lines come in. Again, draw ovals that attach to the head. It’s actually a curved line that looks like a horseshoe. ![]() It’s sort of an oval too, although one end connects to the bottom of the head. It looks like a chicken egg, but a little thinner. The basic shape for the head is an oval that is a little thinner on the bottom. Draw these shapes VERY LIGHTLY, as you’ll be erasing some of these lines later. This will help you get the proportions right before you start adding details. To begin, start with the basic shapes you see. You can download the reference picture here. This drawing is actually of a foal, which is why its mane is shorter. (Take a look at the horse that Sarah, age 7, drew!)
